Faith & the Politics of Enemy Love

This event is being organized and hosted by Meadowvale Community Christian Reformed Church.
Walking into the enemy’s camp can be scary. It requires the removal of thick calluses around the heart. Self-emptying love.
Disarming love. The spirit of God is poured out on all flesh which certainly includes the enemy.
Who is my enemy? Donald Trump’s administration? ISIS? Starbucks? My neighbour who wants to put in a pool which will damage the roots under my silver maple? The righteous in the pews?
Climate change is spiralling. Our political and economic systems are broken. Racism, misogyny and xenophobia are moving into the mainstream. Politicians stoke fear and panic.
The walk onto enemy ground can mean a walk down the plank into the deep blue sea, as Jonah discovered.
Four participants will examine the topic:
– David Blower, a musician and theologian from the UK, will offer some startling thoughts on the subversive Jonah story.
– Brian Walsh, activist theologian and campus chaplain in Toronto, will explore why turning the other cheek equalsresistance remixed, moving beyond panic and fear.
– Wendy Gritter, church consultant and LGBTQ+ advocate, will offer the posture of generous space as a way of moving toward justice across our differences.
– John Terpstra‘s poetry readings will be interspersed throughout.
